In this workshop, delivered by Edward and Lucy of Old Mill Arts, we shall be exploring and learning the foundations of making pigment, paint and pastels. We will be using foraged finds such as stones, earth, clay, iron and shells that can be found in Moray and from elsewhere in the UK, as well as looking at bought sustainable earth pigments from the wider world.
There shall then be a chance to take part in the processes of turning stones into a pigment and then into various paints such as water colour and egg tempera. There shall be opportunities to try out different types of stones, rocks and clays to see how each one is different in consistency and potential colour.
A new addition to this workshop is the making of earth pastels which we will make from the stones and clays ground during the workshop.
Though out the day you will be able to try out these freshly created paints and see the colours of place appearing in front of you. Depending on how much is found and made during the day course participants will be able to go home with a selection of paints to further experiment with.
Suitable for complete beginners and/or experienced art makers who would like to develop their skills in making art materials from the local environment. Participants will go home with the skills and confidence to continue exploring this most intriguing subject.
The workshop is taking place in the Long room at Logie Steading. Participants are invited to bring a notebook and some brushes of choice to the session. A face mask may also be useful when working with dry pigments. We have spares of all these things if needed.
