CoMA Glasgow: Festival of Contemporary Music for All
Date and time
Join us for a day of contemporary music making - workshop, rehearsal and performance - join us for as many or as few events as you like.
About this event
CoMA Glasgow is a new, open and welcoming contemporary music ensemble for players of all instruments and abilities, supported by professional musicians, composers and an impressive library of music. We are part of the well-established CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) group, and are hosting our first public event as part of the Festival of Contemporary Music for All.
Book your free ticket for the day and join us for any/all of the activities below:
12:00-13:30 - John Cage Workshop with Philip Thomas
Philip Thomas, professor of Music and Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, introduces John Cage's ‘Concert for Piano and Orchestra’, explaining the historical circumstances for the piece and its notorious and riotous first performance, and discussing the music itself: how to play the techniques, how to prepare a part, and how to perform it as an ensemble. Philip will work with individual instrumentalists as well as with the group as a whole. Philip will also introduce the interactive apps which explore Cage’s unusual notations and different ways in which the ‘Concert…’ may be heard
14:00-16:00 - Open Rehearsal
Musicians and sound creators of any instrument... join us to rehearse a selection of fantastic contemporary music, including a piece written by one of our members, which we will perform later in the afternoon at an informal performance.
16:15 - Informal Performance
Join us for a short and informal performance of fantastic contemporary repertoire, after our open rehearsal and John Cage workshop earlier in the day.
Our set list for the open rehearsal and informal performance is (subject to change):
- Earle Brown - December 1952
- Ruta Vitkauskaite - Edge of Time
- Yfat S Zisso - Frenzy
- Howard Skempton - Sirens
- Simon Hellewell - Breathing
- John Cage - Concert for Piano and Orchestra
We hope to see you there.
