Event description

Description

The combined choirs of The Hospice in the Weald, Leigh Primary School, Walthamstow Hall School, King’s Rochester School and The New Beacon School will perform Alexander L’Estrange’s cantata, ‘Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose.’

The cantata was commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School and Portsmouth Festivities in 2013 to mark the renovation of the Mary Rose. We are delighted to have Alexander conducting on the night and James Priory, Head of Portsmouth Grammar and Head Elect of Tonbridge School, narrating.

The cantata is based on Tudor melodies, folk songs and sea shanties, and the mood is upbeat, jazzy and fun! The singing will be accompanied by a band, including an accordion, double bass, drums and violinists, some played by former New Beacon boys.

All proceeds from the ticket sales will go to The Hospice in the Weald.

A DVD recording of the event will be available to order at the performance.

We are grateful for the generous support of three local companies: Invest & Fund, Intec and Oakleaf Electrical.
