TRACING THE MISSING HISTORY OF THE SCOTTISH SOLDIERS IN THE FENS

10.30AM - 4PM, 29 OR 30 JUNE
WELNEY WETLAND CENTRE

THE SCOTTISH SOLDIERS,THE OUSE WASHES; THE ORIGINS OF LANDSCAPE CHANGE IN THE FENS:
• NEW RESEARCH ABOUT A CONTENTIOUS MISSING PIECE OF HISTORY
• FILM & PLAY BASED ON THE NEW FINDINGS ON THE SCOTTISH SOLDIERS

Origins tells a local heritage story like no other: after the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester, Scottish prisoners of war dug the great rivers and drains that transformed the landscape and the lives of the Fenland people – as they still do today. Presenting the research by Durham University and evidence from local archives, we present new historical evidence and stories on this important part of local history.

Digging on the Fens for long hours, standing in cold, boggy mud, kept as slaves miles from their families back home in Scotland. Rotting feet, stinking clothes, hunger and disease, escapes despite punishment by death. This is the story in the 1650s of the ‘lost Scottish soldiers’, one that has been handed down the generations: Scottish PoWs from the Civil War forced to dig and drain the Fens’ 100ft river in brutal conditions. Meanwhile Dutch engineer Vermuyden, the Adventurers and local people were in dispute.

Come on Saturday 29 or Sunday 30 June to see the project’s findings unveiled (programme same on both days):

  • Lectures and talks by The Word Garden team, Durham

  • University researchers and local historians and organisations who care for the local environment

  • Hands-on ‘Bodies of evidence’ workshop: skeletons identified by scientific means as remains of Scottish soldiers

  • View the 100ft river, which the Scottish soldiers worked on, from Welney Wetland Centre

  • Watch short play exploring life on the construction site of four significant characters of the time

  • View a 20-minute film, a fictionalised story of Coventina who risks all in search of her Scottish soldier.

Please note the programme will be the same on both the 29th and 30th June.

You must have registered for a ticket to attend.
