Description

Do you have enthusiasm and an inquiring mind?

Do you want to extend your network and enhance your leadership skills?

Have you enjoyed engaging in questions of strategy and governance during your sabbatical year?

Now you’ve led a students’ association, could you help shape other publicly funded bodies?

Come on Board: our future, your future

In Scotland, just over 90 regulated “arms-length” public bodies are responsible for spending over £14 billion of public money each year. Their functions cover health, enterprise, education, justice and the environment and many more areas that affect our lives and matter to us all. It’s in everyone’s interest for the boards to be effective and that in turn relies on the people that Ministers appoint to serve on them having the right attributes and perspectives. Could it be you?

At this introductory workshop you will:

  • learn about the board “landscape” and why you might be interested in a public appointment
  • hear about the regulated recruitment process and what it’s like to be on a board from a recently appointed member
  • find out what different blends of skills, knowledge, personal qualities and experience boards are looking for and
  • explore what you have to offer and how to present it.

Scottish Ministers particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented on Scotland’s public bodies, such as women, disabled people, ethnic minorities and people aged under 50. You might not have thought public appointments are for ‘people like me’ – but your experience and perspective could be invaluable to a variety of organisations. Come along and find out more!

Refreshments and lunch will be provided. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Fifteen places are available and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
