Event description

Description

Theoretical approaches to comics studies have traditionally been concerned with structural analyses of the form. Although attentions are shifting, engagement between the comics form and the rich traditions of critical theory remains limited or sporadic; the medium’s political and critical contexts remain under-explored and under-theorised. In response, this project aims to invigorate comics discourse with insights from continental aesthetics and cultural and political theory, placing discourse on the form within traditions of thought from key critical thinkers. Drawing connections between form and content, between structure and meaning, between the multiple communicative modes of comics, between comics and their wider settings of cultural, political and theological encounter, the comics form will be interrogated and invigorated within its under-explored aesthetic contexts of critical and political value. In order to enable such critique to emerge, this project aims to create a space of reflection and dialogue, where the roles and implications of comics in culture, politics, and meaning-making can be encountered and questioned—where the critical aesthetics of the medium can be explored.
