About this Event
The course includes the following topics:
- Structure and proportions of a cartoon/illustration character (comic and figurative). How to apply this creatively.
- Anatomy and proportion of the body
- The head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth. Proportion and relationship. Clothing and folds
- Features and expression
- Composition of the image.
- Structure of the page (page layout). Organisation of space, spatial relation between frames. Story-telling –frame by frame – the script.
- Relating one scene to the next.
- Creative development of the story using close up/long shot/American field/split image.
- Lettering- how to design lettering. Interpretation of the script. Speech balloons Onomatopoeia.
- The strip
- Personages. The baddie,the hero, the stooge, the heroine.
- Caricature
- Background. Landscapes/ interiors. Perspective. Relationship between person and his environment.
- Inking. Use of black and white. Contrast, shadows. Varying the line.
- Colour circle, mixing colour, different techniques: watercolour spraying, tempera, sponging, texture effects.
- Animal drawing
- Drawing types of transport
- Walt Disney, his films, structure and characterisation.
- Study of superheroes such as Marvel
- Manga
- Hanna Barbera
- Looney Tunes
- .French style cartoons
- Children’s book illustration
THE COURSE
The online course of comics and illustration will run from January 2021 to 14thJuly 2021.We will continue the same programme pursued for the past years at Connaught School for Girls and on Facebook with Waltham Forest libraries. THE COURSE IS DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES
Students do not need to have any previous experience of cartoons or illustration as basic drawing techniques are part of the programme.
LESSON STRUCTURE
After an introduction lesson and exercise on the subject delivered by the teacher William Stok, the students will be helped to develop their skills with personalised tuition and one-to-one discussion with the teacher.

ABOUT THE TEACHERWilliam Stok has a very long career as a comics designer and illustrator, and as a painter and sculptor.
TEACHING EXPERIENCEHe has been teaching all age-groups, from children (during the launch of his children’s books) to secondary and university and college level and at evening classes for adults.
EXPERIENCE AS AN ARTISTHe has been publishing in major companies such as Penguin books, Pan books, Time Out, New Scientist, New Society, Company etc and for childrens’ books, making animation films for television and worked in advertising and has exhibited in many galleries
PRIVATE COLLECTIONSHis work is in the collections of the Tate gallery, the Victoria &Albert museum, HRH Prince Charles.
