Description

'Coming of Age': A Screening of International Short Films

Part of the 2018 Watersprite Film Festival, the films in this screening show the ups and downs of adolescence. The filmmakers will be joining us from all over the world to take part in Q & A after the screening.

// Sa Saíyang Islá (In His Island) // (Philippines)
This beautiful short film is set in a small fishing village in the Philippines revolves around the idea of the formation of sexuality in childhood and parenting a gender-non conforming child. A young, cheerful boy struggles with his identity and finds comfort in his dreams of becoming a mermaid.

// Pussy Willows // (USA)
An emotionally desolate daughter and her suicidal mother finally connect during an evening of bacchanalian rage. Pussy Willows is a dialogue-free, surreal phantasmagoria of jazz, anguish, and clowns.Soaring Soldiers (Denmark)

A son comes into conflict with his father's pride. He wants to bring him up properly. And at first glance they understand and support each other but soon they lose sight of what is happening around them.

Albert lives in his own little universe; a universe where turtles can fly in parachutes and all of the world’s diseases can be cured. Albert and his best friend Theodor often plays on the rooftop of Albert’s apartment. For many years, Albert’s mother has suffered from cancer, but Albert believes that he can cure his mother through the games he plays with Theodor.

This beautiful stop-motion animation shows a father who trying to raise his son in the same way that he grows his plants in his greenhouse; with lots of love and care but there comes a time when he his son must go out alone into the world.
