About the day:
Many counsellors will have had experience of working with cases where the issue of a change in sexual orientation arises during counselling, with either couples or individuals, implicitly or openly. Dr Jacob Jacobson will lead this day on helping counsellors feel more confident in handling such issues, and will consider the implications for the counselling process. This day is primarily designed for counsellors and counselling supervisors, but may also be of interest to sex therapists.
Aims of the day:
To equip counsellors with more confidence in working with issues of sexual orientation, and in particular with:
· unconscious/covert/overt disclosures of sexual orientation made during counselling
· disclosures made during individual work and couple work
· appropriate responses from the counsellor to disclosure, and approaches to take
· working within counsellor competence and deciding when or whether to refer
