Common Causes of Dental Litigation and How to Prevent it.

Course aims: To provide an update on dental litigation, how a claim works and why they are settled.

Course objectives: By the end of the session the delegates will be able to

1. Describe the process by which a claim is made and resolved, and why
2. Appreciate the common causes of litigation
3. Explain a series of risk management strategies to drive down the frequency of successful claims
4. Understand the importance of valid consent and effective record keeping in the management of complaints and claims.

Senior Dento-legal Adviser for Dental Protection

Stephen is a full-time Senior Dento-Legal Adviser and a Specialist in Oral Surgery. He qualified in London in 1984 and went on to have five years full-time experience in hospital dentistry, followed by eleven years part-time (mainly in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department in Oxford) and he still works part-time in practice in Oxford. Stephen has almost 30 years’ experience in general dental and oral surgery referral practice. He was an elected member of Oxfordshire LDC (between 1992 and 2004) and LDC Chairman between 1995 and 2003. Stephen joined the DP team in 2000 as a part-time adviser, becoming a full time adviser in 2007.

In 2005 he completed a Masters in Medical Law which included a thesis about Regulatory Law.

Stephen regularly writes and lectures on oral surgery and dento-legal issues both within the UK and internationally. Within the DP team he is the lead for Regulatory cases. In this role he follows the activities of the GDC and the Professional Standards Authority on behalf of Dental Protection leading the team’s responses to GDC Consultations, and attending key stakeholder meetings with the GDC Executive.

Stephen is also Dental Protection’s Lead for members in Hong Kong.

For the 2017-18 season of Oxford BDA evening lectures food will be included in the main ticket price. However, a complimentary food ticket MUST be booked by Sunday 8th October. Without a booked ticket, the Oxford BDA cannot guarantee food will be available.
