Event description

Description

Common Salt

Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer

Common Salt is a performance around a table – a ‘show and tell’.

It explores the colonial, geographical history of England and India taking an expansive and emotional time-travel, from the first Enclosure Act and the start of the East India Company in the 1600s, to 21st century narratives of trade, race and culture.

Sue and Sheila activate insights into our shared past, laying out a ‘home museum’ of objects and stories; of the Great Hedge of India, of borders, and collections – all accompanied by original Shruti box laments.

Common Salt is a reckoning; the interconnectedness between history and global power, artefact and trade, race and memory is hidden in plain sight.

“Common Salt … was exquisite … A miniature with epic undertones.”

Please bring a print out of your ticket if possible, but we will also have a list of names on the door

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the Library?

There is a public car park beside the Library in the centre of Frome. A good bus service runs to and from Frome. The Library is a short walk from the bus stop in the centre of town. Train services run from Bristol, Bath, and surrounding towns to Frome.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes.

Is the Library fully accessible?

Yes. The performance is on the upper level of the Library, so access is via a lift. Toilets are fully accessible on the upper floor too.

How long does Common Salt last?

About 65 minutes. You are welcome to stay to chat with us after the show.

Are there refreshments available?

No, not inside the Library, but there are lots of cafes in the town centre which is just over the river bridge.
