Event description

Description

The Commonwealth and International Student Christmas is our longest-standing tradition here at Cumberland Lodge and we would love you to be a part of it this year.

The first gathering of international students was in 1947, just a few weeks after King George VI granted us the use of Cumberland Lodge for our educational work. Every year we extend a warm welcome to students from all over the world who are currently studying in Britain,to join us for a chance to experience a typical British Christmas and meet others who are studying away from home.

Experience a traditional Christmas

Our Commonwealth and International Student Christmas conference takes place here at Cumberland Lodge, in a 17th century former royal residence, in the heart of Windsor Great Park. We offer a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with excellent food, comfortable rooms and exceptional quality of service.

Our facilities are spread across three historic buildings, set in extensive parkland grounds. We have a library, chapel, gym, table tennis room, snooker and pool room in the main Lodge building, as well as a bar and plenty of spaces for socialising, relaxing and quiet time. We also have bicycles that can be used for exploring the Great Park, and free wifi throughout the buildings.

The weekend will be full of activities, and our guests will have the chance to experience:

  • A Christmas carol service in the Royal Chapel, where HM The Queen worships
  • A winter trail through Windsor Great Park
  • A traditional Christmas dinner, with a visit from Father Christmas almost guaranteed!
  • An evening of games and entertainment.

Cumberland Lodge is close to attractions such as The Savill Garden, Virginia Water and The Long Walk, which offers a spectacular view of Windsor Castle. There is ample opportunity for walking, running, cycling or wildlife spotting in the park.

Performance arts and social inclusion

The weekend is also a chance to engage in a programme of thought-provoking and inspiring seminars and workshops. This year we will be joined by Streetwise Opera, the award-winning charity that works with people who have experienced homelessness and other members of the community, using music to help them make positive changes in their lives.

Streetwise will be telling us about their work on challenging public perceptions of homeslessness and promoting social inclusion, and there will be a perforamnce from a Streetwise Opera singer. You can read more about one of the Streetwise Opera performances in London in this article from The Guardian.

John Martin from London-based arts company, Pan Intercultural Arts, will also be joining us. Pan uses intercultural performance work to encourage self-expression and promote a deeper understanding of changing cultural identities. The organisation works with communities across London and overseas, empowering people to use the arts as a tool for change in their lives.
