Following its series of successful events on Connecting Rural Communities, the CTO launched a new conference series on broadband in 2014 in view of the key role that broadband plays in development. The Commonwealth Broadband Forum 2014 was hosted by Kenya and the 2015 forum by Nigeria, furthermore, a regional Caribbean Broadband Forum was held in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year. Details of these events, including the presentations, are available at http://www.cto.int/events/previous-events/. Following the success of these Forums the Secretariat is holding the third Commonwealth Forum on Broadband.
The Commonwealth Broadband Forum 2016, under the theme “Connecting Smart Communities”, will acknowledge the central role of Broadband in development, particularly in transforming community life. It will review how communities are connected, administered, and managed to achieve social, economic, and environmental sustainability. This year’s event will examine areas including the development of national broadband strategies and relevant technologies, while also focusing on financing mechanisms, applications and data. The draft programme is attached to this letter, and more information about the Forum can be found at: http://www.cto.int/events.
This will be a two-day conference featuring an exhibition with presentations and interactive panel discussions during the conference. A third day will be dedicated to One Malaysia Internet Centre at Carey Island, Malaysia. The site visit will provide a fascinating insight into how technologies are transforming local communities and give an opportunity to see the technologies in action. The Forum will be a platform for gaining knowledge, exchanging views and seeking partnerships.
