Communicating and negotiating policy with influence

Description

Formulating policy successfully requires negotiations between various stakeholders, often with competing interests. Policy professionals will often find themselves in a position where they need to influence – and negotiate between – assorted groups, not only in order to develop the policy but also once the work has been completed.
This topic provides a practical and interactive approach to using influence when consulting with stakeholders and provides opportunities to practice negotiation skills within a workshop environment, as well as back in the workplace.

Learning activities

This topic features an all-day workshop that is focused on developing your influencing and negotiating skills. The workshop provides a supportive, interactive and practical setting in which to develop these skills.
Preparatory work to be completed before you attend the workshop includes watching a short video on collaboration and consultation and familiarising yourself a case study that underpins the workshop’s practice exercises.

Learning outcomes

After completing this topic, you will:
  • be more aware of how your behaviour affects your ability to influence and negotiate with others
  • understand how to build rapport, relationships and credibility with stakeholders to increase your influence and obtain your goals
  • understand how to prepare for successful negotiation that achieves a win-win outcome
