Communicating Desires, Needs and Boundaries in All Your Relationships
Event Information
About this Event
Do you sometimes say yes when you really mean no? Perhaps you struggle to ask for what you really want or desire? Did you know there are different types of yes - ‘want to’ and ‘willing to’ - and that each involves making a different kind of consent agreement?
Negotiating our desires, needs and boundaries is a skill rarely taught in education curriculums. Fortunately, help is at hand in the form of a best-practice consent model called the Wheel of Consent developed by Dr. Betty Martin.
The Wheel of Consent is a model of relating which brings greater clarity and authenticity to our relationships in all areas of life including work colleagues, friends, family and in our most intimate relationships.
It helps us ask a crucial question about our interactions - who is this actually for? Along with identifying who is doing (and who is done to) this creates four possible dynamics, each of which has very different flavours.
This is the central insight of the Wheel of Consent, from which many consequences and insights flow, helping us differentiate more clearly between what we really want, what we are willing to offer others, and where our boundaries are.
What we will be doing:
This is a 2 hour introductory workshop on Zoom, in which we will focus on the the following core teachings of the Wheel:
- An understanding of the four quadrants of the Wheel, based around asking the questions: 'Who is doing?' and 'Who is it for?'
- A solo practice called ‘Waking the Hands’ for awakening sensitivity to touch and increasing our embodied awareness
We will demonstrate the solo practice - you can simply watch or have a go. There will be a presentation of key concepts from the Wheel of Consent with the opportunity to ask questions if you wish.
There will be no use of breakout rooms - you can choose have your camera on or off and the workshop will not be recorded.
