Communication and Difficult Conversations

Overview

How well do we listen? Is silence, ok? Let's consider how effective communicating can impact on our organisation.

What tools do we need to have difficult communication?

  • “Am I dying nurse?”
  • “Why did you tell my mum she is dying?”
  • “Why am I not getting better?”
  • “I don’t want him to have a syringe pump.”

Are all examples of questions we try to avoid answering. Difficult conversations are a challenge for health care professionals and avoiding answering leads to confusion, often followed by complaints. Assessing capacity during and after is key. However, by learning to explain with clarity and empathy will help to build a better relationship between you and your clients and their families. Managing these challenging conversations holistically helps to break down barriers, evidence shows that how we use communication is echoed throughout grief.

By attending this session, you will be able to build your confidence and gain trust in the people you care for.
