2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Conservation Areas. To celebrate the South East Historic England team would like to invite you to a free conference exploring Conservation Areas and community action.

Aimed at representative from Town and Parish Councils, Civic Societies and Neighbourhood Planning Fora this is a great opportunity to discover practical ways communities can work to improve and manage their conservation areas.

Draft Programme:

  • Welcome from Cllr Robert Thomas, Canterbury City Council Heritage Champion

  • Celebrating 50 Years of Conservation Areas, Looking back and looking forward Ian Harvey, CEO, Civic Voice

  • Debbie Maltby, Senior Conservation Officer, Tunbridge Wells District Council, Tunbridge Wells Conservation Area Appraisal programme and three ways to support communities

  • Practical exercise/group discussion – How would documentation help you manage your area? How much information is needed? What’s the best way of presenting it? What support would you need?

  • David White and Robin Green, Deal Society, Using the Deal Conservation Area Appraisal Toolkit, developing community led appraisals.

  • Rob Lloyd-Sweet, Historic Places Adviser, South East England, Creating a Plan of Action – Formulating Proposals to Preserve or Enhance

  • Judith Carruthers, Development Officer, Heritage Lottery Fund South East England Region, Opportunities for HLF funding to conserve and enjoy conservation

  • John Walker and Jan Pahl, Alliance of Cathedral Cities and Historic Towns: The voluntary sector influencing national policy for conservation areas
