Communities, Inclusion, Decolonisation and Heritage: Many Memories, Many Voices
14 June 2024, 10:30am - 5pm
Belfast Central Library, Music Room (Second Floor, lift available)

This symposium brings together the community sector, the museum and heritage sectors, and researchers from Northern Ireland and beyond.

It aims to give participants a space for dialogue and to catalyse new relationships and cross-sector partnerships. The programme will discuss how we can best work together to amplify community voices in culture and heritage.

The symposium will deepen understanding of how the relationship between communities and museums can support inclusion and decolonisation across sectors.

Key themes:

  • Amplifying Community Voice
  • Museum and Heritage Decolonisation
  • Partnerships and Collaboration
  • Inclusive and Ethical Practices

The symposium will be followed by the launch of the exhibition of the MENII Memories, MENII Voices project (MMMV) which includes a new commission by artist Peter Surginor and a display of contributions by participants from across Northern Ireland's communities.

Lunch and refreshments are provided without charge to all participants.

Limited travel bursaries are available to support attendance by groups and individuals for whom these costs may represent a barrier. Please email mmmv@qub.ac.uk for details.

The symposium is organised by the Many Memories, Many Voices (MMMV) project https://mmmv.org - a partnership between Queen's University Belfast, ArtsEkta, and the Irish Museums Association. The MMMV project aims to explore social and community heritage connected with colonialism and imperialism and to empower people to reflect on interactions between Northern Irish identities, memories, and objects associated with these themes. We are grateful for support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, and the Irish Museums Association.

Organised by

MENII Memories, MENII Voices is a Queen's University Belfast project with ArtsEkta and the Irish Museums Association. We explore social and community heritage connected with colonialism and imperialism, and we empower people to share stories and thoughts related to Northern Irish identities.
