If the last 18 months have taught us anything, it is that we all rely on digital connectivity.
Earlier this month, we presented an update to the East Neuk Community Forum with a timetable for delivery: that timetable starts with this Open Meeting and Q&A.
We've been working on plans for a community broadband service covering the East Neuk for almost a year - initial research followed by a registration process to understand the area's appetite.
That process identified average download speeds across the East Neuk are slower than 24Mbps. Some might deem that as acceptable, but we know it falls far short of what people need – not just now, but increasingly when looking at the growing requirements for digital support, especially when it comes to essential services.
The most up to date OfCom report on average download speeds in the UK shows them to be over 71Mbps. We don’t think it is right to accept our local download speeds are a third of what is now the UK average.
This Open Meeting will be in the format of four hour-long sessions - each session with a presentation of our plans, allowing time for Q&A. If demand for the sessions outstrips capacity, we will look to hold another event in the very near future.

If the demand is there, it is our plan to begin the build of our network in Q1 of 2022. It will deliver 30Mbps as our most basic offering and enable people to pay for the speeds they need. More can be read on the packages planned via this link with our chosen ISP.
More than that – subject to the overall demand - there’s a tangible community benefit as we will be reinvesting to deliver managed, integrated digital communication and services that will benefit multiple audiences across the East Neuk.

Almost half of the population can recall 50 years ago, but more than 50% of residents are under 50.
In the last half century, the East Neuk has seen substantial changes. This project’s vision is about looking towards the next 50.
