Event description
A discussion on how we can affect meaningful change in east London

About this Event

ELBA is committed to playing our role in helping to build a future without racism and inequality. Over the past months we have seen inspirational responses from a number of our community partners as well as numerous offers of support from our member companies who share our desire to address structural racism. Like many organisations, we are continuously working to translate this desire for change into action that will have meaningful, sustainable impact.

Last month, ELBA brought together community organisations for an initial discussion on structural racism to explore its impacts on the voluntary and community sectors. ELBA’s aim is to explore and understand the roles that we can play in creating a more equal and inclusive world for us all. As well as our current programmes such as; Parity, Shift25 and Everyone’s Business, we want to further our communication with the community to gauge a sensitive, valuable, long term approach to diversity and inclusion in the charity sector.

It was clear from the forum that as a sector we are facing a number of difficult challenges in a range of areas - from leadership and governance, to programmes and outreach. We hope to address these difficult challenges in a series of ongoing community forums to allow you to express your challenges and for us to identify how ELBA can support you. Additionally, we will be running a series of ELBA Toolkit sessions led by D&I specialists who will share their expertise and address challenges raised at the forum events.

The first forum will cover recruitment, HR & organisational culture. The recent ACEVO report, ‘Home Truths’, found that only 9% of employees in the charity sector identify as Black, Asian or ethnic minority, compared to 11% in the private sector. Why is this? This session is a space for you to discuss the challenges and barriers third sector organisations face in embedding equality and diversity in HR & recruitment practices, as well as in creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment. Join us for this discussion to share your experiences and the issues that you face. This session will be an open, respectful conversation, during which you will have the chance to feed your thoughts and concerns into our wider work in this space.
