Event description

Description

These workshops are delivered in a fun and engaging way in a lovely community setting at Sprouts Community Arts Centre.
All materials are provided and you will walk away having learnt some valuable skills you can put to use in your own time and for your own creations.

The workshops are delivered by an all-round knitwear professional who has worked at the highest levels in design, technical development, consultancy, and teaching. She specialises in hand, domestic and industrial knitting and teaches all aspects of these skills. Her own designs have featured in both British and Italian Vogue, as well as i-D magazine.

The workshops can be adapted for both beginners and intermediates. Below are more details on the types of skills to be taught and both levels:

**Beginners**

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or looking to refresh your skills, the Beginner Class will give you a firm grounding in the basics of machine knitting. Beginner Classes require no previous knowledge of knitwear or knitting machinery.
You’ll gain an understanding of how the machine works and what it can do, with plenty of time to practice and experiment.
You will learn the following techniques:

- Casting On
- Stripes
- Increasing & Decreasing (Changing The Width Of The Knitted Fabric)
- Lace Holes
- Ladders
- Casting Off

You’ll create a range of samples to take away and learn from. Also, depending on your progress, you will be given the opportunity to knit yourself a scarf or snood at the end of the session.

**Intermediate**

These classes are designed for you to learn a number of more intermediate level knitting techniques with plenty of time to practice and experiment. The intermediate class builds upon the base knowledge learnt in the beginners class.
There are several different skills which can be taught in intermediate level classes depending on those attending:

**Fair Isle/jacquard (Patterns)**

- Using Punchcard Jacquard Patterns
- Distorting And Being Creative With Patterns
- Freehand Patterns

**Tuck & Cabling (3d Knit Structures)**

- Using Punchcard Tuck Patterns
- Distorting Tuck Patterns
- Cabling (Single Bed)

**Woven Knits (Weaving In And E-wrapping)**

- Using Punchcard Weaving Patterns
- Experimental Weaving With Different Yarns And Materials
- Learning The Principals Of E-wrapping
- Using Punchcard E-wrapping Patterns

**Ribbing Attachment (Double Bed)**

Within each individual class you will create a range of samples to take away with you and learn from.

For the Intermediate classes, learners need to have attended the Beginners class or have sufficient knowledge in using the knitting machine, its operations and want to learn more.

NB: The machines used for all classes will be Brother knitting machines. All equipment and yarns will be provided, along with technical notes with instructions to go with your class.
