About this event

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are non-profit democratic organisations. They develop and manage affordable homes as well as other assets contributing to thriving local communities. They act as long-term stewards of these assets, ensuring they remain permanently affordable. To date, there are about 170 urban CLTs across Europe, working hand in hand with existing affordable, social and cooperative housing providers, as well as local authorities. Not only do CLTs help increase affordable housing supply, but they also provide social, economic and environmental benefits, and contribute to addressing housing financialisation, in line with current EU priorities.

This conference, organised by the Sustainable Housing for Inclusive and Cohesive Cities (SHICC) European project, is an opportunity to take stock of the emergence of a European CLT movement, and its relevance to the EU policy agenda. Acknowledging the need to encourage and support initiatives for adequate housing, this event will seek a stronger political engagement from EU stakeholders to support CLTs. European stakeholders will be invited to collaborate and coordinate their efforts to support the rise of the CLT movement in Europe.

The European CLT movement is part and parcel of a growing worldwide movement. As a witness to this, the Centre for CLT Innovation published in June 2020 On Common Ground: International Perspectives on the Community Land Trust, an international compendium including case studies and analyses written by CLT practitioners and scholars from across the globe.
