Event description

Description

The production of new homes is dominated by one model of delivery: speculative house building. On its own, this approach cannot satisfy the number of new homes that are needed in Wales and communities can react negatively to proposals for new developments.

A growing movement of alternative models and approaches to building new homes - from modern council housing to co-operative housing - offer opportunities to deliver popular and affordable housing for communities.

This Network Event will draw on alternative housing models to highlight:

  • the benefits these different models offer.
  • how local communities can begin to think about creating their own community-led initiatives.
  • how a major local authority is bringing back a council house building programme.
  • what the planning system can do to encourage more community-led examples of home building.

Speakers

  • David Palmer, Wales Cooperative Centre

  • David Jaques, Cardiff Council
