Event description

Description

Birmingham’s housing crisis is bad, and getting worse. There’s been a 50% rise in rough sleeping, rent is rising fast, and so are house prices.

Meanwhile, only 780 homes were built in Birmingham last year, and nearly 4500 homes stand empty. There are numerous masterplans in place and a desire for various redevelopment schemes across the city. The city is full of oppotunity but too much off it is being sold to private, luxury developers and foreign investors.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Communities from London to Cornwall have tackled their housing problems by setting up and campaigning for community housing projects - affordable, accessible homes controlled by local people, built on land which would otherwise stand empty or get gentrified.

We think something like this could be done in Birmingham and along with NEF we want to see who else is excited by the opportunity. We’re inviting you to come and find out more, and talk about how it would work. This will be an active, welcoming meeting, with everyone encouraged to join in the discussion. We’ll end by all those who want to forming a group or several groups to take this idea forward.
