CommUNIty Seminar: Opening doors- Community Learning at Leeds Beckett
Thu 27 October 2016, 12:00 – 13:30 BST
Susan Coan, Caroline Mountain, Esmée Hanna
Recently a pilot Community Learning Course was run within the school of Health and Community Studies. This course aimed to bring people from under-represented groups in higher education into Leeds Beckett University in order to experience a ‘taster’ of health and social sciences education over six weeks. We recruited people to the course through existing community links and evaluated the course and the people’s experiences during the programme. This seminar will present findings from the evaluation of the Community Learning Course, showing how it has contributed to widening participation, as well as exploring the potential benefits of this type of initiative as a means of engaging with groups who may be under-represented at Leeds Beckett University. Following a presentation by the course organisers, there will be time for discussion and to explore the question of ‘what next?’ for this type of provision within the faculty. Anyone interested in widening participation and community engagement is invited to come along and find out more about community learning.
Please note that this event is only open to Leeds Beckett University staff.
