About the course

This session will give an overview of comparative judgement and how it can improve assessment. You will also get the chance to have a go at comparatively judging some essays, and to see the results of the judging.

We will look at the ways comparative judgement is being used in practice in primary and secondary schools for writing and maths assessments, and at applications in other subjects. We will examine the reliability and validity of assessments that use comparative judgement, and look at the long-term impact it can have on teaching and learning.

We will also consider the theory behind comparative judgement and contrast it with other methods of assessing open tasks, like mark schemes and rubrics.

Who should attend?

This session is suitable for all teachers who are conscious that some of their students are not learning as well as they would they like them to, and who would like to reflect on their own practice.
