COMPLIMENTARY GERHARD RICHTER INSPIRED ONLINE DRAWING- FT JOHANNES WARNKE
Event Information
About this Event
Join ArtStation and Drawing Cabaret Couture for a COMPLIMENTARY 2 hour online drawing class inspired by Gerhard Richter through the Haute couture designs of Central Saint Martins’ graduate Johannes Warnke.
Exploring a sustainable and sensitive collection, 'Windows of Perception' mediates on the desires of a non-stop virtually connected modern life. Inspired by the angels of Wim Wender’s 1987 Wings of Desire who yearn for the physical sensations afforded only by the human experience, Johannes Warnke identifies our own distanced observatory roles in the age of social media and an international pandemic.
Johannes Warnke, sharing German roots with one of his inspiring figures- Gerhard Richter, graduated from the Fashion Design with Marketing course at Central Saint Martins in 2020 with a first class honours, marked with A+ and A in all degree criteria. In his BA years, Warnke interned at bespoke tailors and houses such as Ermenegildo Zegna and Charles Jeffrey, before completing internships in his 2018/ 2019 placement year at the Couture atelier of Viktor and Rolf, the Embellishment department of Balmain and the 3D Womenswear and Couture department of Givenchy. In the internship role of the design assistant, he gained a high level of technical garment making expertise, which came to light in his graduate collection ‘Windows of Perception’ .
Warnke - the 2020 recipient of the Nina Stewart Award - produced the collection in the bedroom of his childhood home during Germany’s national lockdown, hand-dying his fabrics in the garden. Sustainably sourced and produced with minimum waste, it is a mediation on human connection; playing with the perceptions we have of our own environment.
One of the collection’s looks as well as a customised outfit were worn by Lady Gaga in the 911 music video, and another appeared in Vogue Italia’s November issue modeled by Adut Akech. The singer Ari Lennox wore a custom pair of Warnke's glass earrings and further influential musicians as well as several magazines including Vogue have borrowed his collection pieces for yet unreleased publications. Since his graduation, Warnke’s work has been presented in magazines such as Grazia, Porter, US Vogue, Showstudio and Vein Magazine. He has also been nominated as the finalist for the Green Trail Sustainability Award and the Yinger Prize.
Drawing Cabaret Couture and ArtStation are extremely excited to be showcasing the incredible works of Warnke, who intends to continue to design with sustainability at the forefront of his practice, creating one-off pieces for artistic showcases and theatrical collaborations, while working on his ready to wear line.
