Description

This is a 10 week course, consisting of 10 x 2 hour classes, starting Thursday 18th January, 7-9pm. The minimum age is 16.

Our composition and arranging course introduces you to the field of composing and arranging music in the classical, contemporary, and Jazz traditions. The course is delivered using an eclectic mix of musical examples from songs, film scores, classical and 20th century music. You will explore instrument use, range, writing techniques and harmonic ideas. Please note this is not a songwriting course.


Curriculum

  • Melody writing – motivic development, embellishments and phrases

  • Basic counterpoint – Classical and Jazz

  • Harmonic considerations – tonal and modal harmony

  • Reharmonization

  • Blues forms

  • Rhythm changes, AABA form

  • Ostinatos and pedals

  • Odd time signatures

  • Composition techniques

  • Melodic and harmonic analysis

  • Forms and sections

  • Intros, interludes and endings

  • The 12 tone row

  • Modes of limited transposition


Entry Requirements

To take this course you should have a working knowledge of basic music theory including:

  • Pitch notation in treble and bass clef

  • Major and minor scales

  • Modes

  • Intervals

  • Chord spelling of triads and sevenths

  • Blues form

  • Some playing experience
