Description

Techniques to Enable Children to Create High Quality Musical Compositions

Led by Matthew Hemson

The National Curriculum in England states that pupils should learn to "improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimensions of music". In this workshop we will explore easy to learn techniques that all primary school teachers can use to enable pupils to create and compose on their own and as a class in order to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

We will explore how to facilitate the creation of high quality songs, rounds, instrumental pieces and the use of simple notation. Though aimed at KS2 subject content, this workshop is also relevant for KS1 to advance pupils' musical abilities beyond the expected level of attainment.

The aims of the training session are for attendees to:

  • Feel more confident in leading music composition in the classroom
  • Gather new composition techniques to implement in school
  • Feel more confident in using their speaking/singing voices in the classroom

This session is targetted at the Trowbridge Music Cluster but is also open to teachers from other clusters in Wiltshire.

Attendees should bring along an instrument if they have one - any instrument is fine. You may also want to bring along an iPad if you have one loaded with a music app.
