COMPOSITIONAL STRUCTURES: DOORS
Overview
COMPOSITIONAL STRUCTURES: Doors
Live Online Class: Wednesday 27th January 2026 6pm UTC
+ 14 Days Recording Access
Taught by Lucy McGeown
Join Lucy for a class looking at the way doors and doorways have been used in art to create intrigue, contrasting differences, expansive aspects, symbolic indicators or more simple, as a way of bringing the inside out or the outside in.
Studying a variety of works spanning from the 1800’s to the present day we will be looking at how artists interpret the role of the door. This ubiquitous structure can be used as the very subject of the work or be used as the structure for which the composition can be based. The door offers artists a rich source of ideas; in its ability to create passages through internal and external spaces, both physically and metaphorically, the dramatic difference in light these frames can create and the potential to open up a glimpse into a another world are an inexhaustible inspiration.
Compositionally speaking, they are irresistible! So expect a fun class that will teach how to dissect images to see how these objects are holding it all together, as well as learn to love the humble doorway!
Materials you will need:
- 6 x sheets of white paper (A4)
- Graphite pencils for sketching
- Watercolours, Pastels or Colour Pencils or Pens (any or all of these)
This class is suitable for all levels!

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!
We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.
