Join us for a hands-on workshop where we’ll build something incredible together—a Johnson-Su Bioreactor, a composting system that works in perfect harmony with nature.

It’s slow, steady, and seriously good for the soil.

How It Works:

We’ll meet at Soil Squad’s Community Composting Hub and build the bioreactor as a team. Then, nature takes over. Over the next 12 months, it quietly transforms into mycelium-packed, life-boosting compost—the kind that makes plants (and soil microbes) thrive.

The best part? Come back next year, collect your share, and help us start the cycle again.

How to Join In:

  • We have 10 spaces available—sign up quick!
  • Bring a bucket of organic goodness—think wool, grass clippings, coffee grounds, shredded cardboard.
  • Get hands-on building a compost system that works while you sleep.
  • Enjoy good company, great coffee, and cake (because every great gathering deserves cake).

Come for compost, come for coffee, come to create something that will quietly work its magic all year long. Sound good? See you there.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Johnson-Su Bioreactor?

It’s a no-turn composting system that breaks down organic material over 12 months, creating fungi-rich, microbe-dense compost that’s incredible for soil health. It's built from a pallet, a wire cylinder, insulation and pipes!

Do I need any experience to join?

Nope! This is a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop. We’ll guide you through every step, and you’ll leave with the knowledge to recreate it at home (if you want to!).

What should I bring?

Bring a bucket of organic material to contribute—things like: ✔ Grass clippings ✔ Coffee grounds ✔ Shredded cardboard ✔ Wool scraps No food waste, plastic, or treated wood, please!

Will I get compost to take home on the day?

Not yet! The compost takes 12 months to mature. But you’re invited to return next year, bring a bucket, and collect your share of nutrient-rich, mycelium-packed compost.

What’s included in the workshop?

A guided, hands-on build session A deeper understanding of fungal-dominant composting Great coffee, tea, and homemade cake under the Mirabelle trees

Can children join?

Whilst this is a workshop with adults in mind, children are welcome to attend and remain the responsibility of their parent or guardian at all times.
