Event description

Description

Sounds like spring! Kathryn Williams (flute) and Ben Powell (piano) will perform pieces of music depicting all the things we love and loathe about springtime in England. They will play music about flowers, bumblebees, and sunny afternoons, as well as windy rainstorms, including Rimsky Korsakov 'Flight of the Bumblebee', Satie 'Gymnopodies', Vivaldi Spring extracts and Heller's 'Musical Flowers'.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Kathryn Williams is a flautist and educator. She performs regularly as a soloist and orchestral musician and delivers vibrant and engaging music workshops to the youngest and eldest in the community. Recent highlights include performances with Distractfold Ensemble, House of Bedlam, concertos with Manchester Camerata and Dayton Philharmonic, and with orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, The Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and Sinfonia Cymru. As a music educator Kathryn specialises in experimental performance practice and early-years education. Recently this has included guest lecturing at the Royal Northern College of Music and The Ohio State University, contributing to courses with Aldeburgh Young Musicians, delivering performances and workshops for Live Music Now, and long-term residencies at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Manchester Museum and in a central Manchester nursery school. Kathryn also works with Peoplescape Theatre as an actor/musician/composer for The Silent Songbird, a new touring show created for ages 3-7 as part of Chester Zoo's Sing for Songbirds campaign.

Since winning the British Contemporary Piano Competition in 2010, Benjamin Powell has performed across the UK and Europe, in venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Wigmore Hall, Snape Maltings, IRCAM, and Harpa (Reykjavik). He has performed with the Psappha ensemble, Ensemble 360 and flautist Kathryn Williams. Benjamin teaches piano for Yorkshire Young Musicians and at the Royal Northern College of Music and lives in Glossop with his wife and three children.
