Session details

Mid-20th century council tower blocks are not well liked. Too many were badly built and become ghettos for dysfunctional families. But when high-rise, concrete tower blocks began to be built after the last World War, the best were well-designed, well-built and good to live in. With their decline, blame has been unfairly apportioned to the architects who designed them. Two of those architects were the Jewish emigrés, Berthold Lubetkin and Ernö Goldfinger. Famous in their day, their reputations have collapsed along with that of their buildings. This is unfair. Much of their work has stood the test of time and domestic tower blocks remain an essential component of the modern housing mix. This talk considers Lubetkin, Goldfinger, their lives, their socialist vision, and the ongoing life of their buildings.

Manylion y sesiwn

Nid yw blociau tŵr cyngor canol yr 20fed ganrif yn hoff iawn. Roedd gormod o bobl wedi'u hadeiladu'n wael ac yn dod yn ghettos i deuluoedd camweithredol. Ond pan ddechreuodd blociau tŵr concrit uchel gael eu hadeiladu ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd diwethaf, roedd y gorau wedi'u cynllunio'n dda, wedi'u hadeiladu'n dda ac yn dda i fyw ynddynt. Gyda'u dirywiad, mae'r bai wedi'i rannu'n annheg i'r penseiri a'u cynlluniodd. Dau o'r penseiri hynny oedd yr ymfudwyr Iddewig, Berthold Lubetkin ac Ernö Goldfinger. Yn enwog yn eu dyddiau, mae eu henw da wedi cwympo ynghyd â'u hadeiladau. Mae hyn yn annheg. Mae llawer o'u gwaith wedi sefyll prawf amser ac mae blociau tŵr domestig yn parhau i fod yn elfen hanfodol o'r cymysgedd tai modern. Mae'r sgwrs hon yn ystyried Lubetkin, Goldfinger, eu bywydau, eu gweledigaeth sosialaidd, a bywyd parhaus eu hadeiladau.
