Overview
An examination of industrial manufacturing and product innovation on the development of drainage systems in the nineteenth century. The talk will provide a brief historic introduction on hydrology, followed by a review of the impact on the built environment of below ground drainage systems. There will be an investigation into the influence of the preeminent manufacturers Twyford and Doulton on drainage and sanitation innovation. The paper will conclude with the impact of retrospective installations of nineteenth century sewer systems on buildings of a previous era and how this legacy affects current conservation and adaptive reuse.
Richard Woolf is an industrial designer, architect and building historian in private practice in West London. His presentation expands from his research at the University of Cambridge on building history and his interest in industrial products within the construction process. His practice McDaniel Woolf is known for their contemporary architecture and sensitive scholarly approach to conservation. He is a member of ASCHB and their lead on conferences and symposiums.
