Event description

Description

"I bow my knees before the Father, from whom all paternity in heaven and on earth takes its name". Eph. 3:14-15

'"In revealing and in reliving on earth the very fatherhood of God, a man is called upon to ensure the harmonious and united development of all the members of the family". Pope John Paul II

“Human fatherhood gives us an anticipation of what [God the Father] is. But when this fatherhood does not exist, when it is experienced only as a biological phenomenon, without its human and spiritual dimension, all statements about God the Father are empty…” Cardinal Ratzinger

In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam four tasks: primacy (dominion over creation), procreation (be fruitful and multiply), provision (to till the land) and protection (to keep, or guard, creation). They were the foundations of Adam's mission to establish on earth the family of God, and they remain the foundations of our mission as men to this day.

The essence of this mission is fatherhood, both biological and spiritual. Fulfilling the paternal mission means leading our biological or parish families to the knowledge of God the Father through our own example of fatherhood. Even if we are not yet fathers or have never been a father, there is much we can do to prepare for fatherhood or to express fatherhood to others.

However, in order for men to be successful in this mission, they need to know and imitate who God the Father truly is. In prayer God walks with us, as he did with our forefather Adam in the Garden of Eden. Prayer is our relationship with God and where we discover the loving fatherhood of God. In the prayer of the Eucharist we are brought directly into shared sonship through the sacrifice of His Son.

Our mission is also transient. As our forefather Adam was banished from the Garden of Eden, so we know that this earth is not our home. We are on a pilgrimage with one another and with our families and our parishes, directed towards our eternal home.

And so we come together at this conference to exhort and encourage each other to return once more, with glad and courageous hearts, to the road of pilgrimage. When our families and parishes are invited to join our single-minded dedication to the mission, they too will be heartened and encouraged. For, when fathers turn their hearts to their children, their children turn their hearts to God. Men are indeed icons of God the Father.

Do you understand this mission and are you ready to fulfil it?
