Conferencing the International: Spaces of Modern Internationalism

Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th December

Over two days at the Royal Geographical Society, we will discuss the nature of international conferences and the role that conferences have played - and continue to play - in shaping our understandings of modern internationalism.

This conference brings together leading geographers, historians, scholars of international relations and of conference organising to discuss how international conferences worked, what their impacts were, and what we can know about them.

Day 1 (Tues 18th Dec) will feature sessions on 'Science and Knowledge', 'Post-Colonial Conferencing' and 'International Organisations', and a plenary address by Prof Brian Vick (Emory University), author of The Congress of Vienna (Harvard University Press, 2014).

Day 2 (Weds 19th Dec) will feature sessions on 'Approaching Conferences', 'Conferencing Decolonisation' and 'Contemporary Conferencing', and a plenary address by Prof Madeleine Herren (University of Basel), editor of Networking the international system: global histories of international organizations (Springer, 2014).
