About this event

Ever wondered what it’s like to sit in the therapist’s chair? Now's your chance to find out...

Therapists are often seen as calm, wise individuals who sit quietly while others speak. But what is it genuinely like to spend your working life listening to people’s struggles and joys? How do therapists look after themselves, and what motivates them to choose this career in the first place?

In this candid and engaging 90-minute panel, a group of therapists from New Road Psychotherapy will share their experiences of the profession - from the challenges of holding other people’s pain, to the rewards of witnessing growth and change. They'll talk about...

  • What surprised them most when they began practising
  • The challenges and rewards of being “on the other side” of the therapy room
  • How they balance their professional and personal lives
  • The moments that make the work meaningful
  • What they wish they’d known when starting out

They will also reflect on their own journeys into psychotherapy and offer insights for anyone interested in pursuing it as a career. Towards the end of the session, there will be plenty of time for audience questions, giving you a valuable opportunity to ask everything you've always wanted to know.

Whether you’re currently in therapy yourself, thinking about seeking support, or just curious either personally or professionally, this is a rare chance to step behind the therapy door and hear first hand what the work truly involves. Expect openness, humour, and space to follow your curiosity in a relaxed and supportive setting.

This event is part of Brighton Wellness Festival: a city-wide celebration of holistic health and wellbeing, taking place 1–8 October 2025. Powered by a year-round community of wellness practitioners, BWF exists to promote authentic, inclusive and grounded wellness across Brighton and beyond.
