Event description
This is a practical investigation skills workshop run by TrainTogether, the training division of leading HR consultancy, HeadsTogether.

About this Event

Workplace investigations can be awkward, or scary, or at the very least disruptive and inconvenient.

Investigation meetings themselves can be challenging, recording and evaluating findings and drawing clear conclusions can be complicated, and there are lots of tactics that individuals can use to frustrate the process.

So typically managers try to avoid disciplinary and grievance investigations, or put them off, which isn’t a good option. Delay often makes matters worse, and can leave you open to challenge.

The statutory framework and guidance, and most organisations’ own policies aren’t much help.

It’s the practical and human aspects of an investigation where the challenges lie and you won’t find those in the policies.

‘Hold an investigation meeting’ seems pretty clear. But how do you open and close the meeting? What questions do you ask? What if someone becomes angry or tearful or gives no comment responses? What if they raise a counter grievance during the meeting? Or record the meeting without your consent?

About the course

The workshop will be delivered by Lynsey Stewart, the Director who leads TrainTogether. Lynsey is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and an Accredited Coach. She has been in human resources management for over 15 years and in her current consulting role she has extensive experience of conducting complex workplace investigations. So, she’s excellently placed to answer all your practical questions.

She’ll share her experiences and insights to give you the skills and confidence you need to carry out effective investigations yourself. The workshop is fun and highly interactive, and includes skills practice through group exercises, role plays, trainer-led discussions and case studies.

What will the outcomes be?

  • A solid awareness of an employer’s legal obligations in relation to workplace investigations, and how they fit into disciplinary and grievance processes.
  • The core skills and knowledge needed to conduct a fair and thorough workplace investigation, including questioning techniques and note taking.
  • Skills to evaluate findings and draw clear conclusions once an investigation has been completed.
