Description

If you are currently working in or managing a service that has Individuals who exhbit high risk challenging behaviours - in fact anyone who works with children, young people, the elderly, or vulnerable adults, and is concerned about safety, rights, and potential legal ramifications. Where staff are at times reqired to use last resort interventions, this training course is designed to ensure interventions are used that are as safe, least intrusive and supportive as is possible.

This course uses techniques from the General Services Association, a company used by many of the NHS trusts. Techniques are risk assessed and medically reviewed yearly. Attendees will received a recognised qualification from the GSA which will last for 1 year before needing to be updated.

Aims of the course:

  • List the possible causes of challenging behaviour.
  • Demonstrate de-escalation principles in the event of aggression.
  • Define the term ‘reasonable force’ and apply its principles.
  • Understand the law relating to Self Defence and Physical Intervention.
  • Perform a dynamic risk assessment.
  • Identify the importance of recording and debriefing.
  • Demonstrate effective defensive physical techniques including- wrist, hair, throat and clothing grabs, punches, kicks, third part.y assistance and escorting/guiding techniques.
  • Demonstrate effective 1 – 3 person restraint techniques in standing, walking and sitting positions (can include bed)
  • Practice and reflect the importance of ‘Letting Go’ safely.
  • Practice effective escalation and de-escalation of techniques.


Attendee's will be assessed throughout the course and will need to show a good level of ability and understanding of the techniques in order to pass.
