As part of its Cultural Exchange season, the QMUL Confucius Institute is hosting Chinese movie nights throughout the year. The movies are a great chance for students, staff and anyone interested in Chinese culture to introduce themselves to the Chinese film scene. The genre of movie will vary from month to month; the prolific Chinese movie industry prides itself on its varied output, from comedy to action, romance to historical dramas.
Movies will be screened in the original Mandarin, with English subtitles, so they are a good tool for those learning Mandarin with the Confucius Institute! For the third showing, the box office smash comedy The Final Master will be shown on 9th February 2017.
A Wing Chun master has to defeat 8 martial arts schools to open his own school, yet he has become a chess piece to the local power dynamics.
The film follows a Wing Chun practitioner's ambitious journey to fulfil his master's dying wish of opening a martial arts school in Tianjin, the center of focus for Chinese martial arts at that time. In order to achieve this, he has to send an apprentice to challenge and defeat eight other martial arts schools. Yet, he becomes a pawn to the local power figures, placing his wife and apprentice in danger. In the end, he must choose between what is right and fulfilling his master's wish.
