Event description

Why Connect 5?

Around one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year, and many more suffer with low mental wellbeing.

Connect 5 is a mental health promotion training programme based on the latest evidence base. Evaluation has shown it increases the confidence and core skills of individuals and frontline staff so they are more effective in having conversations about mental health and wellbeing. It has been designed to help people manage stress and distress and increase their resilience and mental wellbeing through positive change.

Join us for Connect 5 Session 1 (brief advice) - a half day of practical training for individuals working in any setting.

What's the relevance to me?

If mental health or wellbeing comes up in your conversations with clients, work colleagues, friends or even family then this is the training for you.

Your learning outcomes -

In Session 1 (3.5hrs training time) you will:

  • develop the skills and confidence to discuss mental health and wellbeing

  • explain mental health and wellbeing by using self-help principles

  • identify local mental health resources and services

“I am more confident talking about mental health and have recently had back to back suicide risks within work, allowing me to put some of the planning and discussion covered on the training into effect successfully. Prior to this I would have been very worried about tackling this” (mentor)

Connect 5 is a RSPH (Royal Society for Public Health) certified course and all attendees will receive a CPD accredited certification.

How can I continue and enroll on Connect 5 Session 2 and Session 3? -

Depending on how much one-to-one work you do with people, you might find it useful to attend all three of the Connect 5 training sessions, just Session 1, or just Sessions 1 and 2 or complete all 3 sessions with us!

If you plan to attend more than one of the Connect 5 sessions, then you must attend them in numerical order, as each builds on the previous one. Also, we recommend that the time between each Connect 5 session you attend, is not more than six months.

All Connect 5 training materials will be provided on the day. Teas and coffees only will be provided. If you have special requirements then please do let us know in good time prior to the start of this training. Thank you.

Other focuses of the training -

Connect 5 promotes a self-help philosophy of helping people to better understand, manage and improve their mental health through an integrated bio-psychosocial understanding of mental health and wellbeing.

Connect 5 enhances the stepped care model of mental health intervention used within community, primary care and in-hospital settings.

Connect 5 has synergy with the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Programme and helps build the capacity and capability of the wider workforce to support timely and effective access to specialist help.

Connect 5 delivers the skills and competencies outlined in the Core Skills for Mental Health Education & Training Framework (2017) for tier 1 & tier 2 section of the workforce.

What is the outcome for the people using services that have Connect 5 trained staff?

Improved access to support for people with low level mental health problems, given that the majority of people with poor mental health and low levels of mental wellbeing will not be in touch with specialist mental health services.

Increased health and wellbeing for people with low level mental health/wellbeing; and

Improved knowledge and skills in self-management and care of their own mental health and wellbeing.

“In terms of confidence, the tools have given me a structure to work from which has made me feel more certain about what we're talking about.” (probation caseworker)
