About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

To celebrate our 25th anniversary year, Moor Trees is putting on a series of informative Walk and Talks to inspire and inform people about the work we are doing to create and restore native woodland on Dartmoor.

Enjoy a tour of Hill Crest and hear Kate and Richard Morley’s rewilding story and their aspirations for Devon Wildland - a coming together of people and land making more space for nature across the Haldon Hills, Teign Valley and surrounding area.

The site covers 16 acres with a mixture of natural regeneration and native tree planting which has been achieved with the help of Moor Trees. We will spend the morning taking a tour with the landowners to understand the opportunities and influences encountered. Moor Trees will then lead an afternoon session of seed collecting various tree seeds, nuts and fruit which will be processed at our Community Tree Nurseries, ready to become native broadleaved woodlands of the future.

Hill Crest began rewilding back in 1992 and started actively engaging in nature recovery in 2012. An abundance of wildlife now thrives on the site including dormice, polecats, barn owls and glow worms. Hill Crest is a key part of Devon Wildland, an initiative to create a network of wilder sites connected in both the physical landscape and through people who share experience, resources and ideas.

We will hear from the landowners about their journey so far, and also about the Wolves and Humans Foundation, a charity formed in 1985 (previously the Wolf Society of Great Britain) which is dedicated to the conservation of Europe’s large carnivores (wolf, brown bear and lynx). It is one of the oldest wolf advocacy organisations in Europe, and we will find out about both the ecology of this site and the impact large predators could have and do have on similar sites elsewhere.

Please bring a packed lunch, water, suncream and waterproofs. Hot drinks and refreshements will be provided. There are toilets on site. There is limited parkign on site, so car sharing would be appreciated if possible. There will be a limimted number of seats available in the Moor Trees vehicle, but booking is essential - Dave Lewis - 07949406959 or info@moortrees.org

Please arrive around 10:45am for an 11:00am start.

Come and join Moor Trees! We need your help, whether for a day, or as a regular volunteer. You could be collecting local seeds, caring for thousands of seedlings in our nurseries or to planting and maintaining conservation woodland.

We have two large nurseries at Broadley Farm, Diptford, near South Brent and Hunter’s Moon in Dartington. Woodland sites are scattered around Dartmoor and in the South Hams. Tree planting takes place between November and April while nursery work – potting, planting and weeding seedlings happens throughout the year. In summer we visit newly planted sites and in the autumn we collect seeds, nuts and acorns and learn various treatment methods to encourage germination.

Volunteers of all ages, abilities and cultures are welcome. We are a friendly group and volunteering with us is a wonderful opportunity to work with other enthusiastic people in beautiful settings, to get healthy exercise outdoors and to make new friends. No previous experience is needed: we explain all the tasks and teach you how to do them.

We ask you to bring a packed lunch, sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing with waterproofs if necessary. Tea, biscuits, hot drinks and tools are provided free by us.
