About this session:

In this session, Sue Cox, Director of Smart-UK, brings her 45 years of experience in the field of addiction and substance misuse to discuss some of the themes of her new book: The Hidden ‘Superpower’ of addiction. Sue will be reflecting on how some notions of ‘recovery’ to date have led to a culture of potentially limiting and disempowering labels and will be suggesting that the statistics around low recovery rates are more a barometer of inadequate interventions rather than a testament to the potency of addiction as an ‘illness’. Sue will be offering a view of addiction which looks at the evolutionary advantages for a brain ‘hard-wired’ for addictive behaviour and introducing a ‘five star’ approach that can harness its superpowers and help transform it.

Director-Founder of SMART-UK and co-founder of Survivors Voice Europe, Sue Cox is a teacher, author, counsellor and acupuncturist who has trained over 20,000 health care professionals. She is a regular speaker at international conferences, with TV, Radio and documentary contributions. Sue and Kim are co-authors of two books on addiction, the second of which, ‘Celebrating the power of the addictive brain’ will be published this year.

Sue will be running a two-day workshop, Unravelling the Addicted Brain, at Connexus in July 2021:
