About this event
While most people think of marches, boycotts, and sit-ins when they think of nonviolence, few people realize that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. practiced a philosophy and strategy for engaging in conflict consciously with a vision of a society in which we all act in good faith for the good of everyone, collaboratively attacking the conditions that allow for injustices to occur and proliferate. This practice can be used to solve conflicts with friends, family, and coworkers, as well as with the social institutions that organize and shape our lives.
In this two hour workshop, we invite participants to bring with them a specific conflict which has resisted their attempts to resolve the situation. Together, we’ll share our struggles and investigate how a few simple tools from Kingian Nonviolence can create new perspectives and possibilities.
Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event
- Participants will become familiar with the Four Types of Conflict, understanding that the simple act of analyzing a conflict can shift the brain from an emotional reaction to a more logical reaction.
- Participants will analyze a conflict in their own life using the Three Levels of Conflict and gain an understanding of how to respond differently to conflicts at the different levels.
- Participants will understand the Elements of Conflict, and how Kingian Nonviolence rearranges these elements to transform a situation.
Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?
- This workshop is appropriate for anyone eighteen or older who has a desire to solve the conflicts in their own life and to support others in the process of solving their conflicts.
How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?
- Practices are comprised of relationships with other people, and conflict is inevitable in all relationships. This workshop will equip participants with the tools to better understand conflicts when they arise and enable them to resolve these conflicts in a positive way. When working with clients who are troubled by conflicts, participants will have tools that have the potential to transform the conflict itself, creating an empowering, virtuous cycle in which conflict gradually becomes an invitation to stronger, better relationships.

Jill Harris
Jill Harris is a writer and teacher from Middletown, Connecticut who has studied and written about Kingian Nonviolence for more than thirty years. She received her undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College and attended the UMass Amherst MFA in Creative Writing Program. As part of her research for Resurrection City, a screenplay about the nonviolence movement in Antioquia, Colombia, she became a certified Kingian Nonviolence Trainer by Dr. Bernard Lafayette, Jr., a close associate of Dr. King’s. She and her husband, Jim, have raised four children together.
Luis Botero
Luis Botero was born in the city of Medellin, Colombia, where he continues to live with his wife, Maria. Together, they raised four children in a city known for having the highest homicide rate in the world at that time when their children were growing up. A businessman and engineer, Luis travelled to the United States to study Kingian Nonviolence with Dr. Martin Luther King’s National Program Director, Dr. Bernard Lafayette, Jr. When Luis returned to Medellin, he was appointed by Governor Guillermo Gaviria Correa to the position of Nonviolence Advisor to the Governor of Antioquia. In this position, he participated in campaigns that ended the violence inside of one of Colombia’s most violent prisons, Bella Vista, and helped put an end to a long history of terrorist attacks against a remote mountain village known as Caicedo. Throughout his career, he has led hundreds of training workshops in Kingian Nonviolence to people from many countries and from all walks of life.
