Talking with Purpose

Session led by: Ishbel Smith, Communication Skills Trainer, Heart In Mouth

They say that talk is cheap but face to face conversation is one of the most valuable assets within a leader’s toolbox.  Leaders are expected to – and need to – not just engage digitally but directly with a rich diversity of people in their day to day dealings.

This training helps us to work together to consciously consider why we speak to folk (and why they speak to us); how we speak (and listen) to them and what we say in order to best secure a positive outcome for everyone in the conversation.

As well as looking at some general principles, we particularly focus on some practical scenarios where we can talk with purpose -  team facilitation; persuasive talking and asking questions.

Delegates can arrive from 9:15 - with a 9:30 start*

Delegates will gain:

  • identify their strengths in oral communication;
  • develop some practical core skills and insight in three key areas for conversation (facilitation; persuasive talking and asking questions);
  • build their confidence that their personal leadership is effective in this most common – and vital - form of communication.

About the Facilitator:

Ishbel brings a diverse range of experiences to her consultancy work.  While at university, she represented Edinburgh in competitive debating at world level.  As a commercial litigator for nearly 20 years, she appeared for clients in court; mediations and negotiations, requiring a keen appreciation for focussed and persuasive talking.  Her latter professional years saw her assume a professional support role in the law firm, delivering and co-ordinating training for clients and fellow lawyers. Ishbel is currently  vice chair of Mary's Meals and the chair of her local community, volunteer driven café (The Mill at St Joseph's).  She founded Heart In Mouth to encourage teams and individuals develop their confidence and effectiveness when using the original (and in her view most powerful) means of communication – the spoken word.  She works with a wide variety of organisations across the sector including The Robertson Trust, Diabetes Scotland, The Institute of Fundraising and Social Bite, providing training, facilitation and bespoke support services.
