    Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be a dancer/fit to do this?

No. It's about doing YOUR dance, not anyone else's. There's no steps. Go at your own pace and move as you want to. It's essential you take responsibility for yourself and listen to your body. Rest/sit when you want, chair dance if you wish. You're welcome as you are.

    Venue + Parking+ Accessibility

The venue is a church hall (to the right of Tilehouse Street Baptist Hall, next to The Highlander)and does have some parking. There is also on street parking available on the road opposite. Note that the venue is up one flight of stairs. Toilets are on the ground floor.

    Refunds? Changes?

No refunds are available and tickets are only valid for the date you have booked for.

    Payment/Booking

Booking/payment is either through Eventbrite (if you came via that way) or through the webpage findingthejoy.co.uk/dance. Booking is only available for the next session and so your ticket is valid only for that session.

    Clothes/footwear

Wear layers as you get warm as you move around and bring a wrap/jumper if you wish as we will sit to check in and out. The floor is vinyl so barefoot or clean, comfortable shoes. NOT socks (slip hazard). Take responsibility for your safety so wear what feels comfortable, safe and easy to move in.

I feel really self-conscious about dancing in public

Most people start off that way and after a while (how long is up to you!) they realise that no-one else cares! No-one else is watching because they are focusing on THEIR dance, their experience. So freeing! So play, explore, dance with your self-conscious self. S/he/they is/are welcome too.

What kind of people come to this?

All sorts, shapes, sizes and categories! Some are very conventional, others more alternative, some spiritual, some not, some old, middle, younger age. Interestingly trained dancers find dancing freely the most difficult as they aren't used to not having steps to follow. All are equally welcome.

    What happens in the session?

People come in and start moving to the music, then all sit in a circle and say names and if they choose a few words. When everyone has spoken the music/dance continues until it's time to check-out (optional invitation to say a few words/reflect). Then everyone leaves.

Can I just drop in an out of a session?

No, please arrive on time. This is a journey we go on together albeit doing our own thing. This is important so it feels safe for everyone and people aren't coming in and out. If for some reason you wish to leave or find yourself struggling or have questions during the session then speak to Claire.

What do you mean by "held space"

Being in a safe community can bring up emotion, which is welcome. The space is held to ensure that the feeling of safety and the rules are held so it's safe for all. That doesn't mean it's a therapy session or for bringing deep trauma to process. We each take responsibility for ourselves throughout.

    Rules

YES Take responsibility for you Respect the space, the dance, others, yourself Confidentiality - What is shared in the room stays in the room NO No alcohol No touching (without consent) No drugs No talking No judging No promoting No devices (no alarms, calls, notifications, beeps etc)

What should I bring/not bring with me?

Bring fluids to keep hydrated ie water or teas, wear layers so you can cool/heat as needed, clean footwear you can dance in (not socks) or barefoot. No mind-altering substances inc alcohol, drugs, tobacco Phones off/completely silenced ie no bleeps, sounds or calls.
