Event description
Meet the project team including architects and ecologists to learn about the Conservation Plans for Scalan's North and South Mills

About this Event

Scalan is an important ecclesiastical site in Scotland and is renowned for its critical role in helping to preserve Roman Catholic faith and worship in Scotland during the 18th century. The Grade A Listed Seminary and Cottage (LB8453) was built in 1767 and was deliberately designed to look like a farmhouse, so it would not look unusual in the moorland landscape which had small, scattered crofts and farmsteads. The building is an important component of a remote group of informally arranged agricultural buildings that together with the North Mill (LB8484) and the South Mill (LB8454) evidence the historical, social and agricultural development of Scalan from the 18th century to the early 20th century.

Working with the HLF funded Tomintoul and Glenlivet Landscape Partnership, a Conservation Plan has been developed for the reuse of the Mills in promoting the history of Scalan by adding to local and visitor interest, knowledge and education. It is not a restoration or full refurbishment project, as part of its ethos is the need to preserve the timeless feel of the place and an acceptance of its worn appearance.

This is a unique opportunity to meet members of the project team including the managing architects and ecologist whilst works are in progress. The visit will offer an insight of how we are delivering a building conservation project whilst working to ensure the enhancement of local wildlife and their habitat.

IMPORTANT: Building works will be taking place at the time of the visit and specific health and safety regulations will be in place. Hard hats and yellow vest will be supplied, but all visitors must wear stout footwear (no shoes, trainers, wellies etc.). No exceptions can be made.
