Description

Conservation Materials Day

The repair and restoration of historic buildings can be challenging and complex. RIBA Conservation Materials Day aims to broaden your knowledge of traditional conservation materials.

This Conservation Materials Day consists of two sessions:

Morning session:
This 2.5hrs seminar will discuss the different challenges you may face with the repair of historic buildings using case studies from inception to completion. Led by architect David Watkins, this session will explore the requirements to understand the historic asset and record condition, identify necessary repair and implement proposals based on sound conservation principles whilst meeting the challenges of unforeseen issues along the way.
This practical and interactive session will cover the key issues with the use of case studies, considering access, temporary protection, surveys and a practical approach to the repair of failed and defective materials, including stone, slate, timber, lead, faience, decorative plasterwork and ironwork, drawing from the experience of a number of completed projects.

Afternoon session:
This session will provide you with an understanding of the skills and application of repair techniques on traditional materials, including stone, brick, mortar, lead and plasterwork. This is achieved by a series of practical demonstrations by specialist contractors experienced in the conservation of historic buildings in tandem with an open question forum. The afternoon session contributions from specialist contractors include:
