Description

One day course with Historic England and English Heritage

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings and the Iron Bridge, two of the world’s most significant historic iron structures, are currently undergoing major projects of conservation and repair.

This free one-day CPD course offers:

  • Behind the scenes tours of the work in progress at both sites

  • Learn about the history, significance and innovative design of each structure, the technical challenges and conservation philosophy of the current projects

  • The opportunity to hear in depth from experts working on the projects about their experiences

The event is aimed at craftspeople, contractors and professionals working in the construction industry, and planning and conservation officers.

Places are free of charge thanks to support from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. Free parking is available at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings. Return transport from Shrewsbury to the Iron Bridge will be provided during the day.

The site visits involve entering construction sites, uneven terrain and narrow spaces including ladder access. Hard hats and hi vis vests will be provided. Attendees should bring their own safety boots, which are required on site. If you do not have safety boots, or if you have any questions about accessibility, please contact juliet.baillie@historicengland.org.uk

Further details about the programme for the day will be released soon.

About the Iron Bridge

Stretching across the River Severn, the world's first iron bridge is one of the greatest symbols of the Industrial Revolution. But the structure is under threat from cracking due to stresses in the ironwork dating from the orginal structure, ground movement over the centuries, and an earthquake in the 19th century. This year, English Heritage is undertaking its largest ever conservation project to save the bridge for generations to come.
