Description

It is my pleasure to invite you to a Hart Seminar featuring Professor Constantine Sandis: 'Action, Duty, and Luck' This is an optional pre-read seminar, and the reading will be circulated to registered attendees one week prior to the event.

Abstract: This paper argues that theories of what makes an action right, justified, permissible, or obligatory are insufficiently concerned with the philosophy of action. I proceed by presenting a familiar distinction between the things we do and our acts of doing them, before using a range of examples to demonstrate its relevance for normative ethics and moral epistemology. While I shall largely limit myself to these two spheres, I hope to also show how argument extends to issues in practical ethics, legal theory, and socio-political philosophy. This project is not that of arguing that adopting the correct theory of action will give us the correct theory of right action. Rather, I maintain that the very possibility of philosophy of action requires us to seriously re-configure a range of debates concerning moral rightness, obligation, evaluation, and luck.

Constantine Sandis is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an international collaborator of the Centre de Recherche en Éthique (CRÉ) in Montréal. His research lies primarily in philosophy of action and its explanation, and he is currently working on a book on the Philosophy of Understanding (for Yale University Press) and a textbook on the Philosophy of Action (for Wiley-Blackwell).

Professor Sandis's seminar is part of our Hart Seminar Series, which features a diverse group of leading scholars working at the intersection of law and philosophy. Hart Publishing contributes generous support to make the seminar series possible.
